Brandon WorkmanBrandon Workman more or less pitched well enough to win in his first two big league starts, but Tuesday, the third time was the charm for the Red Sox rookie.

Workman pitched six innings, yielded just one run on six hits and struck out nine batters to earn his first career major-league win in the Red Sox’ 8-2 win over the Mariners on Tuesday night at Fenway Park, earning him Amica Pitcher of the Week honors.

It was a welcome result for Workman, who had pitched well in his first two starts. On July 14, he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Oakland before giving up a pair of runs and the lead. On July 22, he followed it up with another solid outing, pitching six innings and only surrendering two runs, but he didn’t receive any run support in a 3-0 loss to the Rays.

Now, with the recent acquisition of Jake Peavy, it’s up in the air when — and if — Workman will start again, as he’s been moved to the bullpen.
