Duke cornerback Hud Mellencamp, the son of famous singer John Mellencamp, is facing a felony battery charge in connection to a July 29 incident in Bloomington, Ind., that left an unnamed man with facial fractures and injuries requiring a plastic surgeon.
An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Hud Mellencamp, 19, his brother Speck, 18, and Ty A. Smith, 18, according to the Charlotte Observer. All three men are facing a single count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, which is a Class C felony.
According to the Bloomington Police Department, police officers responded to a call on July 29 at 2:45 a.m. of a fight that had taken place at a Bloomington residence. According to a release, the male who was injured in the fight told police that the Mellencamp brothers and Smith climbed onto the porch of his residence, where he was sitting with two of his friends. The male then asked if he could help them, at which point Speck Mellencamp reportedly punched him in the face, knocking the male backwards and eventually onto the ground. The Mellencamp brothers and Smith then proceeded to punch, kick and stomp him, according to the release.
The male’s roommates then came down to the porch to break the fight up, and once the male was back on his feet, Speck reportedly knocked him backwards and again struck him repeatedly. The male’s roommates then pulled Speck off, at which point the Mellencamp brothers and Smith ran away from the residence.
Duke football coach David Cutcliffe issued a statement via email Thursday night.
“We are aware of the charges that Hud Mellencamp faces in Indiana. Currently, we are giving him the opportunity to return to Indiana to address his legal issues. We will refrain from any further comment until more information becomes available.”
