Joe Flacco Banner at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Angers Broncos Fans, Some Petition NFL to Take it Down

The Ravens shocked all of Denver in the 2012 playoffs when they staged an unlikely comeback in the fourth quarter and eventually knocked the Broncos out of the playoffs in double overtime.

It was a heartbreaking loss and one the city doesn’t like to be reminded of, but due to some unfortunate marketing obligations, Denver has no choice but to be reminded of the loss with Joe Flacco posters suddenly plastering the side of the stadium and surrounding downtown areas.

Denver and Baltimore are set to square off in the first game of the NFL season on Sept. 5. Because the NFL promotes both teams playing in the annual Kickoff Game, and because the Super Bowl champs will be opening their season on the road instead of at home, the league has to endorse both sides at Sports Authority Field at Mile High and downtown Denver.

Not surprisingly, the Flacco banners aren’t a big hit in Denver, and even Peyton Manning expressed his confusion over the black and purple in Bronco country.

“It doesn’t seem to make much sense that the Denver Broncos have to have an opposing player on their stadium,” Manning told KOA-AM 850 in Denver.

Players aren’t the only ones who think there’s something off about the NFL’s latest marketing gimmick, however. A petition that has gathered 741 supporters as of Tuesday night, has been started on Change.org to remove the posters and a Denver television reporter has gone around town putting tape over the Ravens quarterback’s face, inciting his Twitter followers to join him in his endeavor.

Check out a photo of the banner below that is getting Denver up in arms.
