Many people were surprised to see that Jose Iglesias was part of the late Tuesday trade that brought Jake Peavy to Boston. Iglesias was probably one of them.

Iglesias had made Boston his home in recent weeks, solidifying his spot on the major league roster with sterling play at third base. But, with the Red Sox having depth at shortstop and third base in the organization — and with Iglesias’ early-season plate success likely to regress — he was a good option to give up as the Red Sox moved to land Peavy without sacrificing prospects.

Iglesias left Boston without talking to reporters during the tumult of the deal happening late Tuesday night, but on Thursday, he tweeted his thanks to the organization and its fans.
