Landon Donovan silenced 21,000 Vancouver Whitecaps fans on Saturday night. He also could have blinded one or two of them.
The L.A. Galaxy star’s laser-beam strike gave his team an early lead in Vancouver. The two-time defending MLS Cup champion held for a 1-0 victory and moved into second place in the MLS Western Conference.
In the third minute, Donovan ran onto a pass from Robbie Keane, took a touch then lashed a left-footed shot past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted from around 25 yards out.
The goal was the red-hot Donovan’s fourth in his last three games. It was also his 131st career goal in MLS. He needs just four more to pass Jeff Cunningham and become MLS’ all-time leading goal scorer. The Galaxy will play nine more regular-season games in the 2013 season. It’s feasible that Donovan could break Cunningham’s record before the MLS Cup playoffs begin in November.
If he does, it could be one of his last feats in the U.S. top flight. The 31-year-old’s contract expires after this season, and he could join a team in another country in January.
