Major League Baseball announced Monday afternoon that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been suspended for 211 games, which will keep him out of games through the 2014 season.
The suspension is for, as the league said in a release, “violations of the joint drug prevention and treatment program and the basic agreement.”
The discipline is “based on his use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and human growth hormone, over the course of multiple years.”
The 211-game ban is set to start Thursday. However, Rodriguez is allowed to appeal the suspension, and he is expected to do so. He’s also expected to play during the appeal, and he’s expected to make his 2013 debut Monday night in Chicago against the White Sox.
