The Patriots made a minor roster move on Monday, adding some depth at cornerback and waived undrafted rookie tight end Brandon Ford.
LeQuan Lewis, 24, signed with the Patriots on Monday, providing some much-needed depth in the secondary during camp. He went undrafted out of Arizona State in 2011 but has spent the last two seasons between six teams, including the Jets, Titans and Raiders. He made his regular season debut in 2012, playing in five games with the Buccaneers, recording five tackles and intercepting one pass. He also appeared in three games for the Cowboys last season.
Ford, 23, went undrafted out of Clemson this year and signed with the Patriots immediately after the draft. He spent the entire offseason and training camp with the Patriots, but he missed a few practices over the last few weeks and didn’t play in the team’s first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent most of his time in camp with the second-team offense and didn’t separate himself in the same way as fellow undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld. He was waived an injury designation, meaning he would revert to the Patriots’ injured reserved if no other team claims him before Tuesday.
The Patriots were short on cornerback depth during Friday’s preseason opener and have been in practices, while both Ras-I Dowling and Alfonzo Dennard recover from injuries. Dowling reportedly returned to the field on Monday. There is also continued speculation that Rob Gronkowski could return to the field sooner than later, which would eliminate the need for extra depth at tight end.
