Red Sox rookie Drake Britton did something Wednesday night that he had not done since high school.
With the Sox trailing by a run in the ninth inning and their bench running thin, Britton, a recently promoted relief pitcher, was called upon to pinch run for David Ortiz — the first time a Red Sox pitcher has entered as a pinch runner since Clay Buchholz did so in 2009.
The 24-year-old admitted that he no longer knows how fast of a runner he is, but his wheels proved unnecessary. After a Jonny Gomes walk, Stephen Drew launched a three-run home run, allowing Britton to cross home plate at a leisurely trot.
