Visanthe Shiancoe‘s days in the NFL might be numbered.
After signing with the Ravens late last month to help fill the void left in wake of tight end Dennis Pitta‘s season-ending injury, Shiancoe was waived by the Ravens on Sunday as they seek to get down to that 75-man roster limit by Tuesday’s deadline.
Shiancoe didn’t look very good in training camp, according to reports, and caught just five passes for 48 yards in three preseason games with the team this summer.
The 33-year-old tight end established a pretty solid role for himself early in his career, splitting his first nine seasons between the New York Giants (four seasons) and Minnesota Vikings (five). Shiancoe spent most of the 2012 season with the New England Patriots sitting on injured reserve for eight weeks before finally being activated. He played in just four games with the Patriots, not catching a single pass with the team, before being released in December.
With injuries to other tight ends like Dustin Keller in Miami, Shiancoe could get another chance with a team this season but the opportunities will definitely be few and far between at this point.
The Ravens cut 10 other players on Sunday, including veteran linebacker Bryan Hall, but Shiancoe clearly headlined the group. The Ravens are now down to 77 players on their current roster.
