David Ross hasn’t played in a game since June 14, but if all goes as planned, the catcher could begin his rehabilitation assignment and see game action as soon as next week, manager John Farrell said before Saturday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
Ross had been battling recurring concussion symptoms, sending the 36-year-old to the 60-day disabled list on June 25. Ross will not be eligible to return to the Sox lineup until Aug. 18, but he has made dramatic progress in his recovery of late.
Ross participated in batting practice and caught a bullpen session before Saturday’s game, and he is a doctor’s clearance away from beginning his rehab stint. Ross was hitting .185 with four home runs and six RBIs before joining the DL, but he was also valuable to the Red Sox for his clubhouse leadership.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway have handled the catcher duties in Ross’ absence. Saltalamacchia is hitting .263 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs on the season, while Lavarnway is posting a .255 average in the backup role.
