Alex Rodriguez was greeted with a mixed reaction from the fans at Yankee Stadium on Friday, but inside the clubhouse it wasn’t so welcoming either.
After reports surfaced that the Yankees third baseman would be disciplined for seeking a second opinion on his quad injury without informing the team, as well as failing to show up to his rehab game after meeting with Major League Baseball officials on July 12, ESPN New York’s Wallace Matthews is reporting that Rodriguez will be fined more than $150,000 by the team.
Before Friday night’s game against the Tigers, Rodriguez was hand-delivered a letter penned by general manager Brian Cashman informing the 38-year-old of his punishment.
According to ESPN New York, two sources have seen the letter and report that his fine of $153,005 is equivalent to one day’s pay under Rodriguez’s contract, in which he makes $28 million this year.
Rodriguez originally denied receiving the letter before acknowledging it may have been sent to his lawyer.
ESPN New York reported that Rodriguez, his attorney David Cornwell, MLB Players Association executive director Michael Weiner, MLB executive Rob Manfred and Yankees team president Randy Levine were among those who received the letter as well.
Under the collective bargaining agreement, Rodriguez is able to appeal the fine.
