With Sanchez sidelined indefinitely and Smith struggling, the Jets are turning their attention to a few veteran signal callers in hopes of securing some quarterback depth, even if only for the team’s final preseason game.
The Jets are taking a page out of the division rival Buffalo Bills book in their search, as they plan on bringing Matt Leinart and John Beck in for visits this week, according to Gil Brandt of the NFL Network. Both Leinart and Beck are reportedly set to visit with the Bills this week as well, as head coach Doug Marrone seeks to add depth of his own with both E.J. Manuel and Kevin Kolb out with injuries.
Leinart, 30, last played as a backup with the Oakland Raiders in 2012, appearing in just two games and completing 16 of 33 passes with one touchdown and one interception. Beck, 32, was on the Houston Texans roster for a few weeks in 2012, but he didn’t appear in any games and was released on Oct. 3, 2012.
The Jets still have quarterbacks Greg McElroy and Matt Sims on the roster. McElroy played in two games for the Jets in 2012, throwing one touchdown and one interception. He is expected to make the Jets’ roster as the third quarterback. Simms is seen as a longshot to make the team.
