Concussions are still a hot-button issue around the NFL, and they may be endangering the career of yet another veteran player.
Kevin Kolb suffered a “serious” concussion during the Buffalo Bills preseason loss to the Washington Redskins over the weekend. The injury was so serious in fact, that the Bills are concerned that it might be career-ending, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kolb started Saturday’s game against the Redskins in place of rookie first-round pick E.J. Manuel, who underwent minor surgery on his knee last week. During the game, Kolb took a knee to the helmet from a Redskins defender and appeared shaken up by the hit. He remained on the field for four more plays before heading to the locker room with what the Bills’ training staff deemed to be “concussion-like symptoms.”
The 29-year-old quarterback has a history of concussions. He missed parts of 2010 (with the Eagles) and 2012 (with the Cardinals) with concussions, both times losing his starting quarterback job in the process. Now, Kolb could face losing more than just his job, but rather his livelihood.
Kolb will undergo a series of tests for the concussion, but the Bills are remaining cautious with the situation and will not rush him back this season, even if he’s ready to return. The Bills signed veteran quarterback Matt Leinart and acquired second-year quarterback Thaddeus Lewis from the Lions on Sunday to help bolster their depth at the position.
