Havard RuglandMaybe it had to be done, but the Lions’ latest roster move sort of feels like Santa Claus getting cut and a UPS deliveryman taking his place. Detroit will be a much less magical place with Kickalicious gone.

The Lions have decided to move on from kicker Havard Rugland, known as “Kickalicious,” according to Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman. The move clears the way for Detroit to use veteran David Akers instead. Cut by the 49ers last March, Akers has had a very up-and-down last few seasons and attracted the ire of San Francisco fans after some real struggles last year.

Detroit still seems to think that Akers and his requisite baggage are a safer bet than Rugland, though. Rugland, who got his tryout thanks to a series of trick shots in a YouTube video, was impressive in camp — but he may have just been impressive for a guy who had never kicked professionally before, not someone the Lions want to run out in a pressure-packed situation.

Rugland was decent in the preseason, and he could still get a look from other NFL teams in need of a leg.
