Have you ever gotten one of those scam emails from someone claiming to have a rich uncle in Pakistan who wants to make you rich and wondered, who falls for this stuff?
The answer to your question, apparently, is Mike Miller, James Jones and Rashard Lewis.
Those three Miami Heat players were the victims of an alleged real estate scam that defrauded millions of dollars from multiple investors, according to a report by The Associated Press. A witness in the case, taking place in Columbus, Ohio, told a federal judge that Haider Zafar scammed the players as part of a 135-count indictment on wire fraud and other charges, with Washington, D.C., businessman Patwinder Sidhu as the primary victim.
“The complaint accuses Zafar of telling Sidhu that his uncle was Pakistan’s defense minister and was responsible for buying property for that country’s goverment,” the AP reports. “It says Zafar told Sidhu they could buy land and later sell it to the government for a profit.”
An anonymous source told the AP that Miller, Jones and Lewis, who are not named in the criminal complaint, invested $8 million with Zafar. There’s an old saying about fools and their money that probably applies here.
