Johnny Manziel‘s offseason antics have put the college football star under all types of scrutiny, but the Heisman Trophy winner was never in danger of losing his eligibility — until now.
According to an ESPN report, the NCAA is now investigating if Manziel was paid for signing hundreds of autographs on photographs, footballs, mini football helmets and other sports memorabilia at the request of autograph broker Drew Tieman, reports ESPN’s Outside the Lines.
The sources told ESPN that Manziel agreed to sign autographs during his trip to Miami for the BCS national championship game  in exchange for a five-figure fee. The sources witnessed the Texas A&M quarterback singing the items, but did not see him receive the money.
Reportedly Tieman approached Manziel on Jan. 6, the day before the championship game, at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. After the meeting, sources say that Manziel, along with a friend and a personal assistant, went to Tieman’s residence and signed hundreds of items.
NCAA assistant director of enforcement James Garland has allegedly contacted Tieman and one other individual about the signed items that have appeared for sale on eBay.
If the NCAA investigation finds that Manziel has violated the rule and accepted compensation for the signed memorabilia, the quarterback could be ruled ineligible.
