Tim Tebow‘s time in New England has come to an end.
The Patriots released Tebow on Saturday morning, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Tebow was inconsistent running the Patriots’ offense during the preseason, showing flashes of brilliance but also producing his fair share of head-scratching plays.
Tebow signed with the Patriots on June 11 and spent the last two months learning behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett and working on his mechanics with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and offensive assistant Brain Daboll. Tebow made some notable improvements in his throwing mechanics during his brief stint with the Patriots, including holding the ball higher and tighter to his chest as well as showing much smoother footwork.
While he shined at times in practice, Tebow didn’t do much to help his cause in three preseason games with the Patriots. He completed just 11 of 30 passes for 145 yards — including a negative-1 yard performance against the Buccaneers, two touchdowns and two interceptions. There were some positive signs to be taken from Tebow’s final preseason game, as the quarterback completed 6 of 11 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, but even that wasn’t enough to save his job.
