Joe TorreOn Wednesday, it came out that Major League Baseball was prepared to consider a wide expansion of instant replay that could affect all calls except for balls and strikes. Although most of the details are still under wraps, at least some are emerging.

The MLB replay system will feature a challenge option for managers, similar to the coach’s challenge in football, according to the SportsBusiness Journal’s Eric Fischer. One of the primary questions about the replay system was how it would be utilized on a play-to-play basis.

Though little else is known about an expanded replay system, it has emerged that the technology and staffing could cost up to $40 million. Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz were prepared to present their findings from studies into instant replay to MLB owners on Wednesday.
