Alexander Guerrero is looking to become the next Cuban defector to successfully transition to Major League Baseball. It appears that the Red Sox aren’t going after the infielder despite a previous report.
Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 reported Monday that the Red Sox, Dodgers, Braves and Twins were among the teams in the mix for Guerrero, with the Reds being considered a long-shot. But according to Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown, the Red Sox are not among the final bidders for the 26-year-old.
Guerrero, who is already in the United States after defecting from Cuba, is reportedly waiting for the U.S. government to unblock him so that he can pursue a professional contract. There were reports that Guerrero had a seven-year, $32 million deal in place with the Dodgers, but the shortstop’s agent, Rudy Santin, has since denied those rumors.
Guerrero’s offense is considered to be his strength, although he sat out the 2013 season after not making Cuba’s final World Baseball Classic roster.
