Robert Griffin III has been given the all-clear.
The Redskins quarterback was examined by Dr. James Andrews on Thursday, and Andrews officially gave Griffin the OK to suit up for Washington’s season opener next Monday, Sept. 9, against Philadelphia.
RGIII, who tore his ACL in the playoffs less than nine months ago, was relegated to the sidelines and the practice field throughout the preseason, with head coach Mike Shanahan refusing to relent to Griffin’s pleas for playing time. That wait is now over, and Griffin will look for a proper follow-up to the stellar debut campaign that earned him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Griffin posted a 102.4 passer rating and 65.6 completion percentage last season (ranking third and fourth in the NFL, respectively), throwing for 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also led all quarterbacks with 815 rushing yards to go along with seven touchdowns on the ground, but his mobility will likely take a hit as his knee readjusts to game speed.
