Another day, another Yankee down.

The Bronx Bombers’ terrible luck with injuries continued Tuesday night, when All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano took a J.A. Happ fastball right off the hand in the first inning of a game in Toronto. Cano remained in the game, scoring on Alfonso Soriano‘s three-run home run one batter later, but he did not take the field in the bottom of the first.

Losing Cano would be yet another crushing blow in an injury-ravaged season for the Yankees. The 30-year-old has been by far the team’s best hitter this season, boasting a .305/.385/.506 slash line with 24 home runs and 85 RBIs. Cano has played in all 131 of the Yankees’ games this season, and he entered Tuesday with a batting average 35 points higher than any teammate.

He also becomes the second Yankees player to be victimized by Happ this season. The Blue Jays starter nailed Curtis Granderson with a similar pitch back in spring training, causing the outfielder to miss the year’s first 38 games.
