Taking shots at Tony Romo just comes naturally for most people — even to the Cowboys quarterback’s fellow Eastern Illinois alums.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was a guest on Jim Rome’s show on Showtime on Wednesday night, and he was asked who the better college quarterback was: himself or Romo.

“Payton — wasn’t close,” the Saints coach answered. “Just look at the numbers. I don’t know that Tony’s even graduated from Eastern yet.”

Payton’s not-so-humble reply was valid. Payton played for Eastern Illinois University during the era when the Panthers were referred to as “Eastern Airlines” because of their prominent passing attack, and he still holds the record for most passing yards in a single game with 509.

Romo also had a successful career at EIU, setting plenty of records of his own and winning an abundance of awards, including being named a three-time All-American, but that wasn’t enough for Payton to give him the edge.
