The Red Sox are shaking things up before beginning their West Coast road trip.
The Red Sox announced a flurry of roster moves before Monday’s series opener in San Francisco, the biggest of which is the promotion of the organization’s top prospect, Xander Bogaerts.
Bogaerts was called up from Pawtucket, and infielder Brock Holt was optioned back to the Triple-A club. To clear a spot for Bogaerts on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred Clay Buchholz, who hasn’t pitched since June 8, to the 60-day disabled list.
Bogaerts’ arrival has been highly anticipated, as he’s considered one of baseball’s elite prospects. The 20-year-old shortstop has produced at every level of the Red Sox’ system, including Triple-A, where he hit .284 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 60 games.
The Red Sox also activated catcher David Ross from the 60-day disabled list Monday. Ryan Lavarnway was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Ross on the active roster, and Andrew Miller was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for the veteran backstop on the 40-man roster.
Ross, who hasn’t suited up for the Red Sox since June 14, battled concussion symptoms. He’s now ready to go after a six-game rehab stint, and he should continue to provide Boston with plenty of leadership.
The Red Sox made a reliever swap as well. Rubby De La Rosa was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, and Brayan Villarreal, who was acquired as part of the Jake Peavy trade, was recalled to the big league club.
