Carrying the Olympic torch can be one of the biggest honors in an athlete’s career, and Alex Ovechkin finally had his chance to shine.

The torch began its 123-day journey to Sochi in Olympia, Greece on Sunday and Ovechkin missed his team’s final preseason game to do the honors of being the first Russian to carry the torch after it was lit. The winger arrived back in Washington on Sunday after the quick jaunt to Europe, and practiced with the team Monday ahead of the regular season opener.

Ovechkin’s Russia squad will take on Slovenia in Game 4 of the Olympic men’s hockey tournament on Feb. 13.
