The Yankees look toast, and the Red Sox may be responsible for the knockout blow.
“We ran into the Red Sox wave and we haven’t recovered,” Alex Rodriguez said following the Yankees’ 6-2 loss to the Blue Jays on Thursday.
The Yankees have now lost five of their last six games, including three straight to the Red Sox at Fenway Park last weekend, and it doesn’t appear that they’ll be playing in October. New York enters Friday’s action 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the American League and trailing five teams in the standings. According to ESPN.com, the Yankees have just a 3.2 percent chance of making the postseason.
“There’s only so many, ‘Get ’em tomorrows’ left,” Mark Reynolds told reporters following Thursday’s loss.
The Yankees have battled injuries all season, so, in many ways, they’ve really been clinging to life for a while in the AL playoff race. The Red Sox’ three-game sweep last weekend put the final nail in the coffin, though, and A-Rod and Co. have apparently come to that realization.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, clinched a playoff spot Thursday and could clinch the AL East crown with a victory or a Rays loss.
