Ali Sami Yachir‘s name is becoming famous around the world for all the wrong reasons. Actually, it’s only for one reason.

Yachir failed to convert a scoring chance during an Algerian soccer game on Saturday. The error will almost certainly join the ranks of the worst-ever misses in professional soccer history.

Yachir, an attacking midfielder for MC Algier, could have given his team a 2-0 lead had he put the ball into the wide-open goal but he somehow managed to shank his shot. After staring at the ground in disbelief, he raised both hands to rightfully apologize to the tens of thousands of his team’s fans, who packed the July 5, 1962 Stadium for MC Algier’s game against  CR Belouizdad.

Fans and commentators seemed to laugh at Yachir’s gaffe, and the game continued without major incident, as MC Algier prevailed 2-1.

There’s no telling if the CR Belouizdad goalkeeper sent Yachir a thank-you card. He should have, since Yachir was in position to score because he slipped on the ball and fell, leaving the goal at Yachir’s mercy.
