Astros Catcher Matt Pagnozzi Spikes Ball to Backstop on Attempted Throw to Second, Allows Run to Score

The Houston Astros have had a horrendous season, but it’s also been entertaining.

Whether they’re accidentally hitting their own teammates, trying out innovative, albeit incredibly unsuccessful, bunting techniques, or recreating the play Mark Sanchez made famous, the Astros have continued to impress us with their unimpressive plays game after game.

The nightmare of a season is coming to a close for Houston, but that hasn’t stopped them from making even more embarrassing plays. During the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against the Yankees, catcher Matt Pagnozzi attempted to keep tabs on Robinson Cano on the basepaths. Pagnozzi tried to throw down to second base to catch Cano after he took a big lead, but his throw backfired — literally — as he ended up spiking the ball, somehow, and it ended up traveling to the backstop.

Lyle Overbay was on third base during the shenanigans, and was able to score on the bizarre throwing error.

Check out the Astros doing what they do best, being the Astros, in the GIF below with a fist bump to CBS Sports.
