The Packers and 49ers opened up their seasons with a bang — and some punches and a brawl for good measure.
The last time the two teams met, the Niners beat Green Bay in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. Green Bay couldn’t figure out a way to stop Colin Kaepernick as San Francisco rolled to a 45-31 victory, but on Sunday afternoon, Clay Matthews wanted to show that some things had changed since then.
On a third-down play, Kaepernick scrambled left and headed to the sidelines. He was a couple of steps out of bounds when Matthews lunged full-speed at the quarterback and made a big tackle on him.
A skirmish quickly ensued between the two squads as the 49ers made their way over to defend their quarterback. Matthews’ late hit earned him a penalty on the play, but 49ers offensive lineman Joe Staley also received one for confronting the Packers linebacker, and the result was offsetting penalties.
