The playoffs are not even underway yet, but already, the Dodgers have been dealt a huge blow.
The team announced Sunday that Matt Kemp would be shut down for the remainder of the 2013 season. The All-Star center fielder has been battling an ankle injury all season, but after an MRI revealed significant swelling and weakening in the bone, according to Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache, the Dodgers had no choice but to end Kemp’s season prematurely.
“It’s like a bad nightmare — injury after injury after injury after injury,” Kemp said. “Honestly, I don’t know what to say anymore except that the season’s over with for me, and I have to be that cheerleader or that leader on the bench to help those guys through those tough games they’re going to play.”
Kemp was told his ankle could break if he continues to play on it, but that injury will not require surgery. Kemp has also suffered through hamstring and shoulder injuries this season, and he’ll likely have surgery to fix the AC joint in his left shoulder, the one that he had surgery on during the offseason.
Kemp will remain on crutches for at least a month until the swelling goes down and is expected to be ready to go for the 2014 season.
