Floyd Mayweather is at it again.
Nearly two weeks removed from his junior middleweight world championship victory over Canelo Alvarez, the superstar boxer has made the news countless times after making comments on everything from Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel to controversial singer Miley Cyrus. The hustle and bustle over Mayweather follows his interesting choice of ring escorts for the Alvarez fight — rapper Lil’ Wayne and pop icon Justin Bieber.
While making his media rounds in New York, Mayweather stopped by The Colbert Report on Wednesday and added a new star-studded topic to his recent resume: chess.
The show’s host, Stephen Colbert, started one of his typical monologues by talking about a well-known street corner in San Francisco that is famous for the number of people who hang around there and play chess on a daily basis. Police are reportedly trying to shut down the popular hang out spot due to alleged illegal gambling, drug and alcohol use, and violence.
As part of his appearance on Colbert, Mayweather, a chess fan, played into Colbert’s rant on the problem. In the interview, Mayweather opens with a hysterical take, suggesting that there are “some bad apples on the chess board” and “for kids in a tough neighborhood, chess is the only way out.”
While Mayweather’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., doesn’t exactly have a reputation as a tough neighborhood, if the 10-time world champion says chess helps you succeed in life, we’ll take his word for it.
