Jacoby EllsburyBOSTON — You’ve got to crawl before you can walk, walk before you can run and work in a pool before you can play baseball again.

Jacoby Ellsbury, who has been sidelined since Sept. 6 because of a compression fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot, resumed physical (non-baseball) activities Friday. Ellsbury took off his walking boot and did some exercises, which included pool work, according to manager John Farrell.

There is still no projected return date for Ellsbury, who initially suffered the injury while fouling a ball off his foot on Aug. 28 and re-aggravated it while stealing second base on Sept. 5, but Friday’s physical activities are a sign of progress.

“Base on the exam and the second opinion, this was the date — the first day — in which to begin that,” Farrell said. “He’s on target as far as that initial plan.”

Farrell and Ellsbury’s agent, Scott Boras, have both said that they expect the 30-year-old center fielder to return before the end of the regular season. This was the first step toward Ellsbury accomplishing that goal.
