BOSTON — Jacoby Ellsbury took another step forward Friday.
Ellsbury, who had already begun to exercise, started baseball activities Friday. He threw and hit off a tee, marking his first baseball action since he was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot.
“A positive step,” manager John Farrell said Friday. “How quickly those activities will ramp up has yet to be determined. He’s begun them.’’
There is still no timetable for Ellsbury’s return, but the outfielder said Wednesday that he’s “very confident” that he’ll return before the end of the regular season. Boston’s final series of the regular season kicks off next Friday in Baltimore.
Ellsbury is hitting .299 with eight home runs, 52 RBIs and 52 stolen bases this season. He injured his foot while fouling a ball off it during a game against the Orioles on Aug. 28, and then re-aggravated the injury while stealing second base against the Yankees on Sept. 5.
