When James Harden and Kendrick Lamar agreed to visit a high school as part of a national competition, they probably didn’t imagine it would bring them to the western end of Alaska.
Harden and Lamar visited Bethel Regional High School in Bethel, Alaska, after the Warriors took first place in Get Schooled’s National Future Forward Challenge, a three-month, nationwide competition to improve high school graduation rates and college-ready rates. More than 325 schools in 14 states competed, earning points by completing financial aid forms and engaging in college preparatory activities.
Bethel students, speared by their student council, won the prize event at their school by getting more than 60 percent of seniors to complete FAFSAs and getting more than 83 percent of the class to apply to college of vocational school.
Get Schooled describes itself as a nonprofit founded on the belief that students have the power to improve their future, given the right information and motivation. It uses “messengers” — celebrities, peers, pop culture events — and “means” — social media, web — to meet students and deliver information they need to be successful in their educational pursuits.
