Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia added another highlight to his remarkable 2013 season on Friday night in Baltimore.
In the third inning with the Red Sox already up 5-0 on the Orioles, Saltalamacchia hit his 40th double of the year, which is a new team record for a primary catcher. The previous record of 39 was held by Carlton Fisk and Jason Varitek.
The play was initially ruled as a home run, but after an umpire review, the call was overturned to a double.
The 28-year-old is only the 13th different catcher to reach the 40-double mark since 1901. Saltalamacchia is also one of six American League players with 40 doubles this season, joining teammate Dustin Pedroia, who leads the club with 42. Prior to 2013, Saltalamacchia’s career high for doubles in a season was 23.
