John Sterling Botches Alex Rodriguez Fly Ball Narration, Uses Home Run Call Before Realizing Mistake (Audio)

John Sterling Alex RodriguezJohn Sterling likes it when the Yankees hit home runs, and Alex Rodriguez has given him a hand in that regard many times over the years.

Whether it’s a chance for Sterling and broadcast partner Suzyn Waldman to glory in all things Yankees or just an opportunity for Sterling to whip out his home run spiel, the long ball can get Sterling pretty excited — sometimes too excited.

Sterling had to wipe some egg off his face Tuesday night after a Rodriguez fly that Sterling thought was on its way out of Rogers Centre in Toronto instead ended up being easily caught by Rajai Davis. Sterling went all the way through his “It is high. It is fair. It is gone!” call before having to reel it back in and explain that Rodriguez had flied out. (Isn’t the point of that home run call that it can be aborted at any time?)

It was a poor night for Rodriguez, who went 0-for-4 and left three men on base as the Yankees failed to gain ground in the wild card race. But at least he was treated to Sterling’s home run call that wasn’t before the night was over.

Check out Sterling’s shining moment in the audio below.
