Matthew MulliganFOXBORO, Mass. — Let the speculation about Rob Gronkowski begin.

The Patriots released tight end Matthew Mulligan and center Braxston Cave on Thursday. Mulligan was signed just two days ago. The move leaves the Patriots with three tight ends on their roster — Zach Sudfeld, Michael Hoomanawanui and Gronkowski.

Gronkowski has been practicing with the Patriots. The All-Pro tight end has been listed as limited on the practice report with forearm and back injuries.

Cave was claimed off waivers from the Browns on Sept. 1. He participated in practice but had an uphill battle to find the field behind Ryan Wendell and Dan Connolly.

The Patriots now have two open roster spots to fill before their Week 1 game against the Bills.
