Sunday’s showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was expected to be a tough test for Tom Brady, but his job just got even more challenging.
The NFL overturned the one-game suspension of safety Dashon Goldson on Wednesday, according NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, meaning the All-Pro will suit up against the Patriots on Sunday.
Goldson was suspended Monday after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Darren Sproles in Sunday’s game. Goldson was given an unnecessary roughness penalty on the play, the second week in a row he was flagged for that offense. He had been fined $30,000 for striking a defenseless player, Jeff Cumberland, in the head in Week 1’s game against the Jets.
While he won’t miss any game time, Goldson still has to pay. The NFL has fined him $100,000, the same record-setting fine given to Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for a dirty block in Week 1. Goldson has now been fined $130,000 through two weeks of the season, which is still better than losing a single game check, which for Goldson is about $264,000.
He may have won this time, but Goldson will be on a short leash with NFL officials if he happens to deliver another vicious hit at any point this season.
