The Los Angeles Dodgers received a lot of criticism for taking a celebratory dip in the outfield pool at Chase Field following an NL West-clinching victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks last week.
Some of the harshest comments came from Arizona’s most prominent U.S. Senator John McCain, who tweeted that it was a “no-class act by a bunch of overpaid, immature, arrogant, spoiled brats!”
But the anger stemming from this incident isn’t likely to subside anytime soon.
New details have emerged from beat writer Tony Jackson of DodgersScribe.com, who wrote that “The reason I am doing an about-face here is that it has come to my attention that one of the Dodgers players who jumped in the pool — and I will do him the favor of leaving his name out of this for now — openly and loudly bragged after leaving the pool about having urinated in it.”
Jackson also says that “There also are indications that MULTIPLE Dodgers players urinated into the pool, but I can’t tell you that with any certainty. It’s just what I’ve heard. What I can tell you is that it was only a handful of guys — maybe eight, give or take — who ran out and jumped into the pool.”
If the above allegations are true, it would be difficult for anyone who initially defended the Dodgers’ celebration to maintain that position going forward. This is a professional baseball team with a lot of veteran players who understand the importance of respecting opponents. There’s absolutely no need to turn a division title celebration into something similar to the Caddie Day scene from Caddyshack.
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks do not play again this season, which will make next year’s first matchup at Chase Field an interesting one to say the least.
