The Chargers pulled out a big win against the Cowboys on Sunday, but that win came at a big cost.
Defensive end Dwight Freeney tore his quadriceps on Sunday, potentially ending his season, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Chargers are waiting for further information about the injury before determining whether to place him on injured reserve. Either way, it is expected to be a long recovery.
Freeney, 33, joined with the Chargers only after second-year linebacker and pass-rush specialist Melvin ingram tore his ACL in training camp. He signed a two-year deal worth up to $13.35 million, including playing-time and performance-based incentives. The Chargers are only on the hook for $4.75 million in guarantees, which are all to be paid out this season.
Freeney, who had 108 career sacks in 11 years with the Indianapolis Colts, recorded a total of two tackles and was given credit for half a sack in four games this season. If he does wind up on IR, the Chargers will be forced to rely on 2009 first-round pick Larry English, veteran Jarret Johnson and rookie sixth-round pick Tourek Williams to help bolster the pass rush.
