Joe Girardi, Brian CashmanThe Yankees are used to dishing out the big bucks to players. Now, it appears they’ll have to open up the checkbook to keep their skipper around.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Yankees will have to increase Joe Girardi‘s pay “significantly” over the $3 million that he’s currently making in order to retain the manager’s services.

Girardi figures to be in high demand among teams with managerial vacancies, such as the Nationals and Cubs, and there’s also a possibility that the 48-year-old could temporarily step away from managing and enter television. Girardi, who is under contract with the Yankees until Nov. 1, said that he has yet to make a decision regarding his future, but that he doesn’t expect the situation to involve a long, drawn-out process.

While Olney reports that the Yankees will need to pony up some extra cash in order to keep their manager, Girardi insists that finances will have “zero” to do with his decision. Girardi said that he’ll instead do what’s best for him, his wife and his three children.

“It comes down to family,” Girardi said. “They are first. Whatever is best for the group of us, not one individual or just me or my wife or one of my children. Whatever’s best for us as a group is what we’ll decide to do. That’s something I put some thought into and I’m going to have to think about a lot over the next few days, obviously. But that’s a decision we’ll sit down and make and decide what’s best.”

Money often talks in professional sports. We’ll see if this situation ends any differently.
