FOXBORO, Mass. — A.J. Francis wasn’t gone for long.
The former Maryland defensive tackle was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on Monday night, according to a source. Francis was on the active roster before being cut on Saturday.
New England will have to cut a player from the practice squad to make room for Francis. That move has yet to be announced.
Francis had four sacks and nine tackles for loss as a senior with the Terrapins. Francis’ former teammate, Joe Vellano, is the backup defensive tackle behind Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly on the active roster.
Francis was originally picked up by the Patriots off waivers from the Dolphins on Sept. 1. He practiced with the team but was cut before the team’s first regular-season game.
UPDATE 10:25 a.m. ET: The Patriots cut Quentin Sims to make room for Francis, according to a source.
