Todd Helton went out on top on Sunday, closing out his 17-year MLB career with a 2-1 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Helton has spent all 17 of those seasons in Colorado, leading the Rockies to their lone National League pennant in 2007 and retiring as the franchise leader in more than a dozen offensive categories. The Rockies thanked him with an emotional pregame ceremony (and a horse) prior to his final game at Coors Field last Wednesday, and Helton took out a full-page ad in Sunday’s Denver Post to express his gratitude.
“I want to thank you,” Helton wrote. “For every ticket you bought, every cheer you led, every rain delay you weathered, every sign you held, every rally cap you sported. …Â Today I give you the curtain call. I offer my sincerest gratitude for your support over these 17 years.”
Helton retires with a .316 career batting average, 369 home runs and 1,406 RBIs.
