Torey Krug isn’t exactly known as a fighter. Standing just 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, the Bruins defenseman isn’t exactly a heavyweight, either.
On Thursday night, however, the puck-moving, power-play specialist showed off a different side of his game seldom seen to this point in his NHL career.
After getting into a shoving match with Detroit’s David McIntyre in the corner, Krug decided enough was enough. The 22-year-old dropped the gloves and started throwing punches. It’s unclear if any actually landed, but Krug did score the takedown.
Krug is in a battle for the Bruins’ final spot on the blue line. His power-play ability should make him a favorite for that spot, but it can’t hurt to show some versatility. This might help.
The fight was one of the lone bright spots for a TD Garden crowd who saw the B’s drop an 8-2 decision, and Krug’s fighting skills impressed one of his teammates as well. Bobby Robins, who is known for his ability to punch people in the face while wearing ice skates, gave his approval on Twitter after the fight.
