Revis SpotlightThe mayor of one Florida beach city seems to be very excited about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ acquisition of cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Bob Minning, the mayor of Treasure Island, Fla., made a special proclamation Tuesday, announcing that on Thursday, Sept. 12 his city will be renamed Revis Island, Fla., for one day. The name change will be part of a special ceremony taking place at The Club at Treasure Island, according to buccaneers.com.

“Despite Sunday’s heartbreaking loss to the Jets, we’re still very excited about the upcoming season,” Minning said. “Darrelle Revis was an outstanding offseason acquisition.  We wanted to welcome Mr. Revis to our island community and celebrate the Bucs’ 2013 home opener in a fun, family-friendly way.  Go Bucs!”

In the proclamation, Revis Island is described as “an island filled with interceptions, touchdown returns and batted passes.”

“I’m honored and humbled to receive this special honor from the City of Treasure Island,” Revis said.  “Ever since I became a Buccaneer, the support I’ve received from the Tampa Bay community has been tremendous.  I’ll do my best to live up to this honor on Sunday afternoon in our home opener against the New Orleans Saints.”

When Mayor Minning was asked about what made Revis Island different from Treasure Island, he said, “In Treasure Island, we have the most beautiful beaches in all of Tampa Bay, and we always remind beachgoers to wear the appropriate sun screen. But I guess at Revis Island, you don’t need any sun screen — because at Revis Island, you’re ALWAYS covered!”

Solid answer.
