Wes Welker, Jimmy SmithWes Welker has always been a bit of prankster, even if that side of him was suffocated a bit during his tenure in New England. His jokester ways may have peaked in high school, though.

Welker, who impressed with nine catches and two touchdowns in his debut with the Denver Broncos, joined the NFL Network’s NFL Total Access on Tuesday night to talk about the Broncos’ eye-opening Week 1 win. During the interview, Welker was also asked some more lighthearted questions intended to get the often stone-faced receiver to crack a smile.

So, host Dan Hellie asked Welker about dressing up as pop star Britney Spears during a pep rally at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. Welker, who was a football star at the school from 1996-2000, couldn’t help but smile at the question, even admitting to the prank — albeit reluctantly.

“Gosh, I’d love to say false there, but I did,” Welker said with a half-smile. “I’d love to say false, but they have me on video. I’ve already bought them off, so you won’t be seeing that anytime soon.”
