Brandon Marshall played quite the game on Thursday night, and he did so in some flashy green kicks. Now, he’s prepared to sell the stylish cleats for charity.
Marshall, who caught nine passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 27-21 win over the Giants, wore a pair of green cleats that weren’t regulated by the NFL. The Pro Bowl wide receiver, who last season was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, wore the cleats in support of Mental Illness Awareness Week. He’s now auctioning off the cleats — the current going rate is $2,000 — and plans to donate the proceeds to his own charity, The Brandon Marshall Foundation, according to TMZ.
Marshall will likely be fined by the NFL for wearing the cleats, as they are not consistent with the league’s strict uniform guidelines. He was well aware of the likely fine when deciding to don the neon cleats and went ahead with the show of solidarity anyway.
Marshall was fined $10,500 last season for wearing orange cleats, although there was no significant meaning behind that style choice. His fine might be around the same amount this time around, as Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was fined $5,250 for wearing green cleats earlier this season and Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes was docked $7,875 for wearing red cleats last week.
