Britain Soccer League CupLiverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has described the return of Kenny Dalglish, as a non-executive director at Anfield, as “brilliant” for the future of the club.

On Friday evening, owners Fenway Sports Group and the club announced that the legendary Scot had accepted an invitation to join the Reds’ board of directors.

Dalglish was then in attendance at Anfield on Saturday to watch the Reds climb to the top of the Barclays Premier League with a straightforward 3-1 triumph over Crystal Palace.

After the game, Rodgers expressed his pleasure regarding the 62-year-old’s comeback and explained why such decisions have been a personal objective since he was appointed in 2012.

“It was very important,” he told LiverpoolFC.com. “I said when I came in here, I was looking to bring back some of those iconic figures who have played a great part in the history of this club.

“We’ve done it in the football staff, the likes of Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones. Someone like Kenny coming back is brilliant for everyone. He’s coming back as a non-executive director.

“It’s very important to have people like Kenny, who know the heart and soul of the club and the supporters can identify with. That’s great for our growth.”

Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez channeled the spirit of Dalglish in their performances against the Eagles, finding the target within four minutes of each other during the first half.

Having worked on the partnership in practice at Melwood, Rodgers took pride in seeing the combination thrive in a competitive scenario and pledged that the pair will only get better.

“It has been pleasant because I have seen them work in training and they obviously have that telepathic identity with each other,” the Northern Irishman continued. “They are both good players, they understand each other’s role and they are in their best positions. But it has been nice to see it in the games, because in the real game that’s where you see the combination.

“In some of the moments in the first half, they were close together, they work well together and some of their play is outstanding. It’s great to see and I think that will only get better as they play longer together.”
