David Ross was in awe of everything when he stepped up to the podium after Game 5 of the World Series. He was in awe of being in the World Series, being behind the plate for Jon Lester’s gem and being the guy to drive in the game-winning run.
Oh yeah, and there was that whole paper airplane thing.
A fan threw a paper airplane onto the field with two outs in the seventh inning of Game 5 at Busch Stadium. Lester, who was locked in a 2-2 count with Yadier Molina, calmly walked over, picked it up and handed it to the bat boy before recording the final out of the seventh. Lester showed great composure in handling the wreckage, but Ross was pretty amazed by the well-constructed aircraft and its safe flight.
“I don’t know. I don’t know whether [Lester] would have thrown it. But we all — me, Yadi and the umpire — were pretty impressed,” Ross said of the paper airplane. “That was a nice throw. That thing glided in there, pretty good direction, nice airplane, nice big one. We were all talking about that – ‘That’s a nice throw. Where did that thing come from?’ We were all kind of in awe. I don’t know what Jonny thought. The home plate umpire, me and Yadi were all pretty impressed.”
Lester also recorded two outs in the eighth inning before handing the ball to the Red Sox’ bullpen. He now has four wins this postseason, as well as one big clean-up effort.
