Dustin Penner was angry, and rightly so, after receiving a high and dangerous hit from Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt during Sunday’s game.
The hit , to the surprise of many, did not result in a penalty of any kind, which frustrated Penner to the point where he called out the referees on Twitter shortly after Anaheim’s 6-3 victory.

The hit briefly knocked Penner out, and according to Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register, the “Ducks report that Penner is improving but will remain in [Orange County] to undergo further tests. Have to imagine concussion protocol is being followed.”
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported on Monday that Garbuff will have an in-person hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, which means he could receive a suspension longer than five games. A lengthy ban for Garbutt wouldn’t be surprising since this hit was a clear head shot and you could argue that the Stars forward charged as well.
Penner joined the Ducks in the offseason as a free agent after spending two years with the Los Angeles Kings. This is his second stint in Anaheim, he also played for the Ducks from 2005-06 through 2006-07. He has tallied two goals and two assists this season.
