The Cleveland Indians really wanted to win their wild-card game Wednesday night. So did their fans, who tried to help the ballplayers as the professionals struggled to get the job done.

In the bottom of the eighth, with the Tribe down 3-0 and an out on the board, a fan took measures into his own hands on a fly ball to left field. As the Rays’ David DeJesus came in for a catch, the fan tossed a cup at the outfielder.

It was a valiant try, but the toss was too late, and the cup did not land close to DeJesus. It did prompt a reaction from DeJesus, though, who delayed his relay throw while looking at the object that fell right in front of him. He wasn’t too perturbed, throwing the ball in and handing the cup over to a policeman along the foul line — but maybe he didn’t know what was in that cup.

According to reports circulating on Twitter and the like, DeJesus was not accosted by just any ballpark cup. The offending object was actually full of dip spit from someone enjoying the game the old-fashioned way.

Gross.

But then again, rooting for a team that just doesn’t win a lot often causes people to do crazy things.

Check out the dip diversion in the video below.
